Member of British Standards Institution committee DS/1 (Dependability) since 2002, Chair from 2010 – February 2023.

Principle author of BS 5760-0 (Guide to Reliability and Maintainability). Review and comment on a wide range of dependability and related standards.

Liaison member of BSI Committees: CB/101, FMW/001 and SCP/001/05 to DS/1.

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)

Principle UK expert in, or convenor of, the project teams for development for a number of standards within IEC Technical Committee TC56 (Dependability), including:

  • IEC 60812 (Procedure for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis),
  • IEC 60300-3-1 (Analysis techniques for dependability – Guide on methodology),
  • IEC 60300-3-3 (Dependability Management: Application Guide – Life Cycle Costing),
  • IEC 60300-3-10 (Analysis techniques for dependability – Guide on maintenance and maintainability),
  • IEC 60300-3-11 (Dependability Management: Application Guide – Reliability Centred Maintenance),
  • IEC 60300-3-12 (Dependability Management: Application Guide – Integrated Logistic Support)
  • IEC 60300-3-14 (Analysis techniques for dependability – Guide on Supportability).
  • IEC 60300-3-1 (Analysis techniques for dependability – Guide on Reliability),

Recipient in 2018 of IEC ‘1906 Award’ in recognition of “exceptional current achievements …contributing in a significant way to advancing the work of the commission”.  Citation reads: “In recognition of his important contributions, both as project leader and expert, in areas such as Life Cycle Costing, dependability and reliability management.

European Committee for Standardization (CEN)

Expert member of CEN technical committee TC319 (Maintenance), acting as liaison member to DS/1 and participating in development of a number of standards including:

  • BS EN 17666 (Maintenance Engineering),
  • BS EN 17485 (Maintenance within Physical Asset Management)
